Plans are under way for a series of camps with the Cubs attending the County Cub Camp at the Norfolk Showground in May and the Group holding a Jubilee Camp in June.

Congratulations go to Stuart Daley for his Award of Merit made by the Chief Scout, Bear Grylls for services to Scouting.

We still have children on the waiting lists for sections – the only thing preventing us from providing these youngsters with a range of exciting activities is adult support:

If anyone is interested in helping with any of our sections that meeting during the evenings in Taverham, we are always looking for more adults.

More and more reliance is made on volunteers so if being part of a successful Scout Group is for you then please contact me for more details.

Ian's Update February 2012

An active start to the New Year with many children joining the Group or moving sections as another year passes. Winter sees a series of indoor programmes and looking forward to Spring and Summer when everyone can spend more time outdoors.

Scouts, however, are a hardy bunch and members of the Scout Troop will have undertaken another winter camp at the end of February near Cromer! Look out for a report next month.

Nigel Gabriel

Finally for this month, Leaders and Committee Members were saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of colleague Nigel Gabriel in early January. Nigel was Pack Assistant for the Waingunga Cub Pack and was a valuable and respected member of the leadership team.

He will be sadly missed by all in the Scout Group and our thoughts and condolences go out to his wife Shirley and son Nick.

Happy New Year! Wow! What another great evening for our fireworks – the rain stayed away again and we had a packed night. Despite a slight increase in ticket price this year, we sold out even sooner than ever and we hope that everyone who came had a fantastic and value for money evening out – for a fiver!

Importantly we raised over £7000 for Group funds which will be invested in the children in the village through the Scout Group activities.

A big thanks to everyone who came along to help or watch.

2012 looks to be a great year with a County Cub Camp being held at the Showground, and the Group are planning a Group Family Camp at Eaton in May which should be a fantastic weekend.

The Group recently held it’s AGM which reported a successful year in 2011. All members of the Group Committee agreed to stand for a further year and we look forward to a successful 2012.

A big thanks to all involved with the October Jumble Sale – nearly £400 being raised which is a record. At the time of writing our firework display is a few days away and hopefully will have another success to report!

A big thanks also to all the staff at Abbotts Estate Agents and Pamela Janes for all their help with selling tickets which at times seems the primary purpose of the business with the number of people buying!

Finally just to say final big thanks to everyone for a busy 2011 and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy 2012.

(Please note tickets are limited and there will be no admission without a ticket and there is no car parking available at Scout HQ. Do not leave it too late as this event always sells out in advance.)

November sees the Group taking part in the annual Remembrance Parade at Taverham Church. Our Beavers have been planting bulbs for the spring at a local care home and our Cubs are to attend a Northern Norwich district sleep over. Imagine a hall full of 8-10 year olds having a sleep-over!!

Scouts this term are completing a lot of badge work and had a very successful summer camp in Kent.

Over the coming months several leaders will be undertaking training in several areas of skill including archery, rifle shooting and expedition training.

Members of the Group Executive Committee have been recently awarded by the Chief Scout for Service to Scouting:

Jim Barwick and Roger Larwood – Certificate of Commendation for Service to Scouting

Angela Butler, Jon Stanbrook-Evans and Enid Stanbrook-Evans – Award of Merit for outstanding support to Scouting over many years

Ian Colman – Bar To The Award of Merit for further outstanding support to Scouting over 25 years

September sees some leadership changes for the new school year and the Group is delighted to see Pam Sizer returning to the Group after some years away to take on the role of Group Scout Leader, responsible for the Scouting sections within the Group. This important role is to ensure the Group provides the best possible Scouting and resource for all the young children that are members, supported by the Group Executive Committee. Pam was formerly with the Scouts as Assistant Scout Leader and Venture Scout Leader and we wish her every success.

We would also like to thank David Cousins who has stepped down from the role and will continue as an Assistant Leader with the Cub Scout Section.

We still need more adult support to if you are interested then please get in touch.

You will have heard or seen reports recently concerning various budget cuts for voluntary groups and the impact this may have. Some have asked how this could affect Scouting; the good news is that there will be no impact as Scouting gets no funding from councils or otherwise at a local level. We totally rely on raising all our own funds and volunteers to run all aspects of Scouting in Taverham and this will continue. Do your bit and get involved!

With Scouts summer camp underway soon the following few weeks will (hopefully!) give some well earned time off for the leaders ready for a return in September. A successful Group always needs more help and a big thanks to all parents who have supported the Group whether it be helping at the weekly meetings or at the various fundraising events or our HQ maintenance sessions.

Taverham Scout Group provides an action packed programme of activities for nearly 150 youngsters every week - from the ages of 6 to 14.

We still need more volunteers – if you are interested on doing your bit for Taverham then please let me know if any of the following appeal:

Section Assistant Leaders:

In our Beaver, Cub and Scout sections (6 to 14 years). These are uniformed positions and persons must be 18 years or over (no maximum age). Uniform and full training provided in methods best suited to individual needs (eg. On-line or face to face). Role is to support the section leader and other assistants in designing and running the weekly meeting programme and supporting other events as required.

Section Helpers:

As above, these positions are for those wishing to support the section leadership team as arranged and provide additional adult support as required. These are non-uniformed positions and a basic level of training is provided.

Fundraising Support:

The Group runs a series of event during the year – typically, Fireworks night, Taverham Fayre BBQ, Exploding Brass and Jumble Sales. We always need additional manpower on the day to set up/sell/cook/ etc. Lists of events are sent to ‘registered’ volunteers and you can do as few or as many as you wish.

HQ Maintenance:

Local Scouting receives no central funding and all monies must come from subscriptions or raised through fundraising activities. Whilst a certain amount of HQ and ground maintenance is hired in, we try and do as much as we can ourselves through one or two sessions per year. If DIY or gardening is something you enjoy then this may be for you.

Full CRB checks are carried out for any role working directly with children.

Ian's Update June 2011

May saw the annual Cub Camp take place at the County HQ at Eaton Vale. 37 boys and girls were joined by 9 adults for the weekend of activities which included Abseiling, Climbing, Kayaking and Archery. With the combination of light mornings, bird song and lack of wristwatches, the children soon adapted to the open air much to the amusement of the adults – all 37 sat ready for breakfast at 5.45am banging plates and spoons!

A big thanks to all who helped support the event and the parents who gave valuable support over the weekend.

September will see some changes in our leadership; David Cousins our Group Scout Leader has reluctantly had to stand down from the role due to work commitments but will be continuing assisting with the Cub section in the Group. We are currently identifying the right person to take over this role which is overseeing the Scouting aspect of the Group through the Beaver, Cub and Scout sections.

We will also be seeking additional support to the Group and a list of the volunteer roles will appear in next months edition.

With Exploding Brass not far away which we do jointly with Taverham Band, the end of July sees the annual Scout Camp take place – this time to Downe in Kent – a favourite for the Group for many years.

I still recall (1985?) when we celebrated Christmas day on camp at Downe (in August) which included full Christmas dinner and a Christmas Zip Wire – featuring Dan Gentle climbing a rope ladder about 40 feet up a tree, perched on a branch dressed as Santa as he helped the Scouts climb on to the harness. This was of course well before ‘Risk Assessments’ were invented and no doubt Santa climbing a rope ladder would now fall foul of any such assessment – we all of course lived to tell the tale!

Malawi Placement

In July 2011, one of our Scout Troop helpers, Ciaran Scott, has been given the opportunity to undertake an international placement in Malawi, as part of his third year of study in adult nursing at the University of East Anglia. This involves spending two weeks in Ekwendeni hospital. This will give him the chance to work outside of the United Kingdom to gain valuable experience about culture and illnesses which aren’t common in our country. To make his placement possible he is holding various fundraising projects and would very much like your support in helping him make this placement possible.

Beaver Scouts 25^th Anniversary

April 1^st was the 25th anniversary of the founding of Beaver Scouts (6-8 years old), with 1st Taverham Beavers attending school (Nightingale, Ghost Hill, Taverham Middle and Drayton) in uniform to mark the occasion. This is the start of a year of events including a special birthday party and a trip to Pleasurewood Hills.

Do you have Sainsbury’s Active Kids Vouchers?

Do you have/collect or get offered these vouchers when you shop at Sainsburys? If you have or can get some then the Scouts would be please to accept them. We have been able to acquire camping equipment and other items for the Group in recent years. If so – then pop an in an envelope marked ‘Scouts’ and put in the Scout HQ letter box which is on the fence at the rear of the Doctors surgery car park (opposite village hall entrance in Sandy Lane)

Exploding Brass – 16^th July 2011 - Volunteers Needed!

Exploding Brass! as many of you will know is a great community event organised jointly between Taverham Band and Taverham Scout Group and the volunteer support is one of the key reasons that the event exists.

Over the weekend of 16^th July we are seeking additional support in the setting and clearing up of the event and also during the show itself.

If you are able to offer any support from Friday 15^th to Sunday 17^th then we would like to hear from you. From putting up fences, selling goods on the night to clearing up rubbish there is fun for everyone. Please contact me.

Taverham is one of the largest Scout Groups in the area and is striving to continue to maintain and grow the group. To ensure the groups success, we are looking for volunteers to give any amount of time that they can to assist in the running of the group. We are currently seeking volunteers to help run the following sections:

Beavers (6-8 yrs) – Wednesday Early Evening
Cubs (8 – 10 ½ yrs) – Monday/Tuesday Nights
Scouts (10 ½ - 15 yrs) – Wednesday Night

Tom Lee

Members of the group were shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Tom Lee in December. Tom had been a member of the Scout Group since the mid 1980’s when he took part in the series of Gang Shows. He undertook roles as Scout Leader and Assistant Venture Scout Leader during the following years and more recently supported the Cub section. Tom had vast experience from a life of Scouting which many youngsters and adults have greatly benefited from. His support, knowledge and friendship will be sorely missed by many in Taverham.
